Usually when you click on a hyperlink, you are transferred to that Webpage and would need to click the Back button in your toolbar to return. This works well if the hyperlink transfers the visitor to another Webpage within your Website; however, if the hyperlink transfers the visitor to a different Website altogether, they often get involved in the new site and forget or fail to return to your site.

One way to attempt to maintain their attention on your Website is to program the hyperlink so that, instead of transferring them to the other Website, they see the new Website in a smaller window within the Webpage they are currently viewing. The only drawbacks from the visitors perspective are...
(1) Opening a second copy of the browser window uses more resources on their system.

(2) They can't click their Back button to return to previous Webpages during this session since the new browser window begins recording the history of its progress from this point on.
However, since the new window opens as a smaller window, it usually reminds the viewer that they have been branched in a different way than with most hyperlinks.
