3 . . . Tips and Tricks

WIN XP DESKTOP LAYOUT

By default, Win XP has only one icon on the Desktop -- the
Recycle Bin. The reasons that more icons may appear on the
Desktop of a new Win XP computer you purchase is that many
computer manufacturers customize the Desktop based on choices
they have made for their customers.

If you miss having My Documents, My Computer, and other icons
on your Win XP Desktop, you can revive them as follows:

- Right-click on a blank portion of the Win XP Desktop screen.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Desktop tab in the Properties dialog box.
- Click the Customize Desktop button.
- Place a check mark by any of the icons you want to add on
the Desktop.
- Click OK 2 times to close dialog boxes.

On many systems, Win XP is preset to 'clean up' your Desktop
every 60 days, moving icons you haven't used recently to a folder.
To disable this 'clean up' feature, repeat the steps listed above,
removing the check mark next to Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard
Every 60 Days.

WHEN TO GET NEW SOFTWARE VERSIONS

When considering a new or an upgrade version of a software
application, it is generally a good idea to wait until it has been
released a while and includes with it (or is downloadable from
the vendor's web site) 'bug fixes' (patches to correct problems)
they didn't see or choose to fix prior to release.

This is true not only for software applications (Word, Photoshop,
etc.) but is especially true for new or upgraded versions of your
operating system. A new version of an application usually has a
version number that ends in a '.0'

I usually wait until it is available with bug fixes included or
downloadable from the vendor. The version number then
usually ends with some number greater than zero. If you do
install an application that has some problems, you can usually
find 'bug fixes' at the vendor's website.

4 . . . Interesting Sites

IDIOMS

For example...
- Deadringer
- Gung Ho
- In the Bag
- Jaywalk
- Kitty-Corner
- Make No Bones About
- P's and Q's
- Spitting Image

CUT DOWN LONG URLS
http://www.snipurl.com
Tired of trying to share those very long URLs (Web addresses)
that often break into multiple lines when inserted in an
email message?

This sites offers a free service that I frequently use -- 'convert'
a long URL into a short one.

5 . . . Non-Nerdy Stats

DID YOU KNOW?
- There are more than 200 satellites orbiting earth solely for the
purpose of private communications services, including pagers,
telephones, and computers.

- An adult walrus typically eats about 3,000 clams per day.

- The average American's diet today consists of 55 percent
junk food.

- There are more than 5,919,682 telephones in New York City,
more phones than in the entire country of Spain.

- 90 percent of all species that have become extinct have been birds.

- All the coal, oil, gas, and wood on earth would only keep the
sun burning for about 3 days.

- The average major league baseball lasts 7 pitches.

- Fifty years ago, a third of U.S. employees worked in factories,
making everything from clothing to lipstick to cars. Today, a little
more than one-tenth of the nation's 131 million workers are
employed by manufacturing firms. Four-fifths are in services.
