3 . . . Tips and Tricks

CHANGE A FILE FROM 'READ ONLY' TO WRITEABLE

When you transfer a file from a CD or DVD to your hard disk
drive, it may still be in a 'read-only' format. To convert the file
from read only to a writeable format, do the following:
-- Open My Computer on your Windows Desktop.
-- Open your hard drive window (usually C).
-- Branch to the location of the file you want to change.
-- Right-click on the name of the file and click Properties.
-- Click the General tab in the Properties dialog box.
-- Remove the check mark by Read Only and place a check
by Archive.
-- Click OK.

NEW MONITOR ON AN OLD COMPUTER

If you install a new monitor on an old computer it MAY create
a mis-match since newer monitors refresh so quickly. If the
cursor on your screen doesn’t move smoothly (after you’ve
verified that the mouse rollers are clean), then you possibly
can solve the problem as follows:
-- Open Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Performance.
-- Click Graphics button.
-- Move the slider for 'Hardware acceleration' one notch to the
left and click OK. If mouse movement doesn’t improve,
try moving the slider 2 notches. If this doesn’t solve the problem,
then move the Hardware acceleration setting back to Full because
maybe your mouse is defective or else the mouse drivers have
become corrupted and need to be reinstalled.

4 . . . News You Can Use

Scam Alert
(shared by computer consultant, Ken Loomis)

I have been getting an inordinate number of emails from people
claiming to somehow be associated with the Nigerian government
and looking for help getting large sums of money out of the country.
This is a scam and lots of innocent people have lost a lot of money
to these people. They con you into putting up just a little money to
help pave the way for a huge deposit into your bank account, but
ultimately the deposit never arrives.

A variation on this is that they will send you a 'cashier's check'
and it looks completely legitimate. They ask you to deposit the
check and send them a portion of the cash. Your bank will accept
the check for deposit and may even tell you that the funds are as
good as cash. But after the check goes thru all the clearances it is
bounced back as uncollectible. The money you sent them is gone
and so is the money you deposited. It would seem that the bank
is responsible for the loss since they told you the check was
'as good as cash,' but that is not the case.

So keep up your guard and remember, if it sounds too good to be
true, it probably is. At the very least, check it out thoroughly before
giving anyone money, even if it seems to be their own money you
are giving back to them. It may be coming out of your pocket.

I've just posted my annual every-growing compilation of
Holiday Humor. This massive list includes cartoons, jokes,
and other types of humor related to the holiday season.

Each year I add more and more. None are intentionally offensive,
but if one annoys you, please just scroll past it to the next one.

Following are a few samples of what's you'll find there...

Christmas at Grandma's Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents.
At bedtime, the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their
prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of
his lungs. 'I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE... I PRAY FOR A NEW NINTENDO... I PRAY FOR A NEW VCR...' His older brother leaned over and nudged the younger
brother and said, 'Why are you shouting your prayers?
God isn't deaf.' To which the little brother replied,
'No, but Gramma is!'

Musical Advice to Christmas Shoppers
Make out your Chopin Liszt early before Debussy season,
when you have time to check out Verdi good bargains are,
can still get gifts Faure good price, not have to Handel
large crowds and have time to give Bach things you decide
you don't want.

- The Cat's Night Before Christmas
- A Jewish Night Before Christmas
