NON-NERDY STATS . . . LEARNED AT A RECENT SEMINAR FOR EDUCATORS: 'Today's average consumers wear more computing power on their wrists than existed in the entire world before 1961.' -- Guy Schmidt ADDITIONAL INTERESTING FACTOIDS (sources unknown): - Computer power is now 8000 times less expensive than it was 30 years ago. If we had similar progress in automotive technology, today you could buy a Lexus for about $2. It would travel at the speed of sound, and go for about 600 miles on a thimble of gas.' - Half the world's population has never used a telephone and 85 percent has never been inside a car or truck. - There has been more information produced in the last 30 years than during the previous 5000. - A weekday edition of the New York Times contains more information than the average person was likely to come across in a lifetime during 17th-century England. 5 . . . TIPS AND TRICKS . . . CONSIDERING SWITCHING TO WINDOWS XP? First, if you buy a new pre-built computer you are likely to automatically receive Windows XP -- which is quite stable when installed on a blank hard disk drive. However, think twice before upgrading your current system if... ... you already have a stable version of Windows 98, ME, NT, or 2000 that is working fine. ... you have a system with less than a 700 MHz CPU, 128 MB of RAM, and 1.5 GB of free hard disk space. ... you change things on your computer a lot. Mandatory registration ties your copy of XP to your specific PC as it is. Change several components and XP may think it's been copied to a different system -- and stop working -- at least until you call and get approval from Microsoft. For more details, plus links to some resources for testing your PC's readiness for Windows XP, go to http://www.langa.com Also check the following for more details about the suggested amount of RAM for Windows 98 vs. Windows XP: http://www.iteachyou.com/icp/ram.htm PRINTING IN GRAYSCALE ON A COLOR PRINTER (offered by Hildy Mignone) Most people use some flavor of INKJET printer for their printing needs -- particularly on home computers. Most of these inkjet printers print in both black and in color. Printing frequently with color can raise the cost-per-copy considerably. Therefore, since most print jobs are just fine with black ink only, you can change the default setting of your printer so it automatically prints in 'grayscale' unless you manually set it differently. Following are approximate steps for changing your printer's default setting. The exact steps may vary depending on your brand of printer and version of Windows: - Click Start - Settings - Control Panel. - Double-click to open Printers icon. - Double-click to open the icon that represents your printer. - Click PRINTER - PROPERTIES. - Click Colors tab (or Advanced tab or maybe another tab, depending on your brand of printer) - Click Print in Grayscale. - Click OK. You can turn off the Grayscale setting each time you want to print in color. However, each time you restart your computer, it will revert to Grayscale being turned on. Remember, you will not see similar choices if you do not have a color printer. 6 . . . BITS AND BYTES OF HUMOR . . . THE RULES OF CHOCOLATE: -- If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too slowly. -- Chocolate covered raisins, cherries, orange slices and strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want. -- Money talks. Chocolate sings. Beautifully. -- Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look younger. Therefore, you need to eat more chocolate. -- Put *eat chocolate* at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you'll get one thing done. -- A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Now, isn't that handy? -- If you can't eat all your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer. But if you can't eat all your chocolate, what's wrong with you? -- If not for chocolate, there would be no need for control top pantyhose. An entire garment industry would be devastated. You can't let that happen, can you? Your source for life-long learning
