HEARING AUDIO ON THE INTERNET
(excerpted from tips at http://www.worldstart.com)

Q:
I can hear instrumental music on websites, but on other sites that have
sounds I don't hear anything. Is there some way to fix this?

A:
Most instrumental music on web pages are MIDI files while other
sounds like 'You've got mail!' are usually WAV files. Rather than
representing musical sound directly, MIDI files transmit information
about how a song should sound that is then processed by your
sound card. WAV files represent musical sound directly.

Each type has its own volume control in your computer.

Go down to your System Tray (right corner of your Taskbar, next to
the clock) and double click your speaker icon. A volume control
interface will appear on your screen.

Make sue that Mute is unchecked and that the following volume
controls are turned up:
- Wave
- MIDI (or SW Synth on some systems)
- CD Audio

This should allow you to hear all the sounds of the web --
or the reverse if you wish.

-----

CURSOR DISAPPEARS WHILE TYPING
ON WINDOWS XP SYSTEMS

Most Windows XP systems are preset so that the cursor on the screen
automatically hides while you are typing something -- requiring you
to click on a blank portion of the screen to once again see the location
of your cursor. If you are unknowingly pointing to a button in a
toolbar when you perform this click ritual, you may actually
activate that feature -- an annoying by-product of this setting.

To change Windows XP settings so your mouse won't play
hide-and-seek with you, do the following:

- Click Start - Control Panel (or Start - Settings - Control Panel).
- Click Switch to Classic View if you see it listed on the left
side of your screen.
- Double-click to open Mouse icon.
- Click Pointer Options tab at top of Mouse Properties dialog box.
- Click to remove checkmark (if necessary) by 'Hide Pointer...'
- Click Apply (if available.
- Click OK.
- Click FILE-CLOSE to close Control Panel.

5 . . . Non-Nerdy Stats

There is a bank that credits your account each morning with
$86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening
deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day.
What would you do? Draw out ALL OF IT, of course!!!!

Each of us has such a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning,
it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost,
whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries
over no balance. It allows no overdraft.

Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the
remains of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits,
the loss is yours.

There is no going back. There is no drawing against the 'tomorrow.'
You must live in the present on today's deposits. Invest it so as to
get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and success! The clock
is running. Make the most of today.

To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed
a grade.

To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave
birth to a premature baby.

To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly
newspaper.

To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are
waiting to meet.

To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed
the train.

To realize the value of ONE-SECOND, ask a person who just
avoided an accident.

To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person
who won a silver medal in the Olympics.

And remember that time waits for no one. Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called
the present!!!

6 . . . Bits and Bytes of Humor

A somewhat inexperienced musician who joined an orchestra
on a cruise ship was having a terrible time keeping time with
the rest of the band.

Finally, the band leader said, 'Look, either you learn to keep
time or I'll throw you overboard! It's up to you... either sync
or swim.'
