Go to http://www.iteachyou.com Click Ask a Question >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Minimum Specs for a Surge Protector A surge protector is essential to protect your computer from spikes in the electrical current. Most good surge protectors cost under $40 and should be replaced when the audible or visual indicator tells you it's time -- or about every 2 years -- whichever comes first. Following are minimum specs for a computer-grade surge protector: - Be sure it's a surge protector, not just a power strip. - Be sure it has been approved and rated by Underwriters Labs. - Be sure it has at least 2000 joules. - Be sure it has a maximum clamping voltage of 330 volts; a higher number delays the protection from kicking in. - Be sure your surge protector has phone connections to protect modem and phone lines since phone lines, too, are susceptible to carrying electrical spikes. - Best to get one with an audible or visual signal to alert you when the surge protector dies. - Choose one by a major vendor such as Newpoint, Kensington, Belkin, or another company you know. Keep it visible if it has a visual (not audible) alarm. ----- Control Mouse While Highlighting This tip works in Word, on Webpages, and in many other programs, allowing you to highlight a large block of text that often exceeds what you can see on the screen at one time. - Double-click on the first word in the block you want to highlight. - Use the scroll bar to scroll down so you can see the last word in the block you want to highlight. - While holding down the Shift key on your keyboard, click the left mouse button and you should see a large block of text above the final click. Note: When scrolling down the page to locate the end point, don't use the Page Down key or arrow keys or you will lose your marker for the beginning of the block. ----- Change %$#*@+! and Pull-Down Menus and Toolbars in Office 2000 and Office XP so they Behave Like in Prior Versions of Office: - Click TOOLS-CUSTOMIZE. - Click Options tab in Customize dialog box. - OFFICE 2000: Remove checkmark by 'Standard and Formatting...' and by 'Menus show...' and click Close. - OFFICE XP: Place checkmark by 'Show Standard...' and by 'Always show... ' and click Close. Note: You will need to make this change once in Word, in Excel, in PowerPoint, and in Access. 4 . . . Non-Nerdy Stats Just 100 Years Ago...in 1903: -- The Wright brothers first powered flight was December 1903. -- The average life expectancy in the US was 47. -- Only 14 percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub. -- Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. -- A 3-minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11. -- There were only 144 miles of paved roads. -- The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. -- Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California -- More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home. -- Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. -- The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was 30. -- Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. -- Just think what it will be like in another 100 years from now. 7 . . . Bits and Bytes of Humor Rules of Housekeeping - Layers of dirty film on windows and screens provide a helpful filter against harmful and aging rays from the sun. Call it an SPF factor of 5 and leave it alone. - Dust bunnies should never be disturbed. Rename the area under the couch 'The Galapagos Islands' and claim an ecological exemption. - Cobwebs artfully draped over lampshades reduces the glare from the bulb, thereby creating a romantic atmosphere. If your husband points out that the light fixtures need dusting, simply look affronted and exclaim, 'What? And spoil the mood?' - In a pinch, you can always claim that the haphazard tower of unread magazines and newspapers next to your chair provides the valuable Feng Shui aspect of a tiger, thereby reducing your vulnerability. Roll your eyes when you say it, as though EVERYONE knows this. - If dusting is really out of control, simply place a showy urn on the coffee table and insist, 'This is where Aunt Hazel wanted us to scatter her ashes.' - If unexpected company is coming, pile everything unsightly into one room and close the door. As you show your guests through your tidy home, rattle the door knob vigorously, fake a growl and say, 'I'd love you to see our den, but Fluffy hates to be disturbed and the shots are SO expensive.' - Explain the mound of pet hair brushed up against the doorways by claiming you are collecting it there to use for stuffing hand-sewn play animals for underprivileged children. - Don't bother repainting. Simply scribble lightly over a dirty wall with an assortment of crayons and try to muster a glint of tears as you say, 'Little Joey did this the week before that unspeakable accident... I haven't had the heart to clean it.' - Mix one quarter cup pine-scented household cleanser with four cups of water in a spray bottle. Mist the air lightly. Leave dampened rags in conspicuous locations. Develop an exhausted look, throw yourself onto the couch, and sigh, 'I clean and I clean and I still don't get anywhere...'
