CHANGING INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS
(shared by Sol Schumer and Gini Pedersen)

When you pay an Internet Service Provider (ISP), they provide you
with one or more email addresses, for your use. The ISP 'owns'
those addresses, and maintains the services to support them.

When you leave an ISP, you no longer have access to your old
email addresses, and need to begin using email addresses from
your new ISP. Of course, you can still maintain the old ISP
as long as you continue paying their monthly charge.

4 . . . News You Can Use

We have just launched a new and improved version of
Our Message Board!

When I started offering [another version of] a Web message
board for computing and Internet questions over 5 years ago,
I never dreamed it would grow to the resource it is today.

About 3 years ago, I joined forces with 2 colleagues and together
we generally can answer (or get an answer) to nearly all computing
and Internet questions thrown our way. And, we get to learn a lot
along the way ourselves.

Your [hopefully friendly] moderators are...
1. Ken Loomis -- teaching colleague and computer consultant --
and generous host of server space and much more
2. Lutz Winkler -- Long time administrator and active member
of Seniors Computer Group
3. Gini Pedersen -- yours truly

While it's on your mind...check it out now...

. . . Go to http://www.iteachyou.com
. . . Click Ask a Question.
. . . Print this page of instructions.
. . . Note that you can READ postings without registering (try it now!)
but please don't hesitate to follow the outlined steps for registering
so you'll be ready when you have a pressing question about
anything related to your computer or the Internet.

Additional Note:
Registration is free and we promise to never, ever use the info
you provide for any other purpose. Requiring registration is the
only we can truly protect the privacy of people who post on
Our Message Board and keep hackers from accessing it.

WINDOWS XP SP2 SUGGESTIONS FROM GINI

The massive update for Windows XP is available.
Should you get it now?
Should you wait?
Will it cause problems on your computer?

These questions and more are answered in various postings you
can read that are written for us mere mortals to understand.

Remember...

- Before you install it, you should read the various postings shared
by our own Ken Loomis on Our Message Board. I truly trust Ken's
recommendations on this important task.

- Check frequently on Our Message Board to see Ken's emerging
SP2 recommendations. Again, go to http://www.iteachyou.com
and click Ask a Question, etc. as outlined in the previous News
item above.

FIND OLD MILITARY BUDDIES
http://www.military.com/Military/Locator/New/Splash/
Military.com has a buddy finder. Search by name and by branch
of service. You can also search by unit.

If you don't find who you're looking for, try the buddy boards.
Post the name of the person you are trying to find. You may not
find him or her but you may run into someone who knows their
contact information.

You have to register with military.com to use this service, but
it's free.

ABBOT and COSTELLO, Computerized!

From an excellent *free* newsletter (E-zine) offered at
http://www.seniorresource.com

ABBOT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den, and I'm
. . . thinking about buying a computer.
ABBOT: Mac?
COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.
ABBOT: Your computer?
COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.
ABBOT: Mac?
COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.
ABBOT: What about Windows?
COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?
ABBOT: Do you want a computer with Windows?
COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look in
. . . the windows?
ABBOT: Wallpaper.
COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer
. . . and software.
ABBOT: Software for Windows?
COSTELLO: No, on the computer! I need something I can use
. . . to write proposals, track expenses and run my business.
. . . What have you got?
ABBOT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?
ABBOT: I just did.
COSTELLO: You just did what?
ABBOT: Recommend something.
COSTELLO: You recommended something?
ABBOT: Yes.
COSTELLO: For my office?
ABBOT: Yes.
COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?
ABBOT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!
ABBOT: I recommend Office with Windows.
COSTELLO: I already have an office and it has windows!
. . . OK, let's just say, I'm sitting at my computer and I want to
. . . type a proposal. What do I need?
ABBOT: Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOT: The Word in Office.
COSTELLO: The only word in office is office!
ABBOT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?
ABBOT: The Word you get when you click the blue 'W'
COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue w if you don't start
. . . with some straight answers. OK, forget that.
. . . Can I watch movies on the Internet?
ABBOT: Yes, you want Real One.
COSTELLO: Maybe a real one, maybe a cartoon. What I watch
. . . is none of your business. Just tell me what I need!
ABBOT: Real One.
COSTELLO: If it's a long movie I also want to see reel 2, 3, and 4.
. . . Can I watch them?
ABBOT: Of course!
COSTELLO: Great, with what?
ABBOT: Real One.
COSTELLO: OK, I'm at my computer and I want to watch a movie.
. . . What do I do?
ABBOT: You click the blue '1'.
COSTELLO: I click the blue one what?
ABBOT: The blue '1'.
COSTELLO: Is that different from the blue w?
ABBOT: The blue '1' is Real One and the blue 'W' is Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: But there's three words in 'office for windows'!
ABBOT: No, just one, but it's the most popular Word in the world!
COSTELLO: It is?
ABBOT: Yes, but to be fair, there aren't many other Words left.
. . . It pretty much wiped out all the other Words out there.
COSTELLO: And that word is real one?
ABBOT: Real One has nothing to do with Word. Real One isn't
. . . even part of Office.
COSTELLO: Stop! Don't start that again! What about financial
. . . bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?
ABBOT: Money.
COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?
ABBOT: Money.
COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?
ABBOT: Yes, it comes bundled with your computer.
COSTELLO: What's bundled to my computer?
ABBOT: Money.
COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?
ABBOT: Yes. No extra charge.
COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer?
. . . How much?
ABBOT: One copy.
COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?
ABBOT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.
COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?
ABBOT: Sure, why not? They own it!
