Go to http://www.iteachyou.com Click Ask a Question >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> UPS DEVICE -- PROTECTS AGAINST VOLTAGE DROPS A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) provides protection against voltage drops that are too excessive for the computer's power supply to handle or for complete power outages. A UPS device usually provides up to several minutes of battery power that allows you just enough time to save what you are currently working on and to perform an orderly shut down. Good UPS devices cost between $80 and $150. High quality UPS devices cost much more. Be sure to read the directions carefully. Most UPS devices also include surge protection. The battery in the UPS device needs to be replaced periodically and the better models will let you know when it's time to change the battery. Good brands include Belkin, MinuteMan, Tripp Lite, Best Power, and APC. You should replace your UPS device when the warranty runs out. A system without a UPS device (mine, for example), merely shuts down when there is insufficient electrical power, sometimes resulting in corrupted files. This is particularly critical in companies where they are working with/on a real-time database that can become corrupted if interrupted. Most affordable UPS devices only give you a certain length of time to manually shut down your system. The average length of the time that the UPS will keep your computer running, based on the number of devices hooked up to it, is usually stated on the box. However, that is of no use if you aren't actually at your computer when the UPS device has to take over. If you're concerned about glitches or outages, you can just turn off your system between uses. However, turning your computer on and off repeatedly every day is not a good idea. Following is what I do... - I always save everything as I go so I don't risk losing unsaved files for any reason. - I close files I'm done working on even though I may choose to leave the program open to use again. For example, I may close a report in Word but leave Word itself open. - I leave computer on but turn my monitor off between each use. I personally don't use a screen saver or any power management settings since they are notorious for causing conflicts and other challenges. - I turn my system off and unplug the surge protector it's connected to from the wall if the power becomes very erratic because of a storm, emergency power situation, and when I go on vacation. This also includes cables that are connected to either a dial-up modem or a cable modem. AUTOCOMPLETE FEATURE IN INTERNET EXPLORER The AutoComplete feature in Internet Explorer finishes typing what you started in Web address fields, password fields, and on forms if this information has been typed within Internet Explorer on a prior occasion. To access Internet Explorer's AutoComplete feature: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Click Content tab. 3. Click AutoComplete button. 4. Make Changes as desired. 5. Click OK. Note: Although I choose to use the AutoComplete feature which also helps with 'remembering' passwords at some sites, it is a bit of a security risk since others who access your computer could also access these sites. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Got a question?
