Go to http://www.iteachyou.com Click Ask a Question >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WINDOWS XP -- STATUS OF SP2 (shared by Ken Loomis) Several of my clients have asked my opinion of SP2, the second service pack for Windows XP, so I thought I'd pass along my current thoughts on it. The short answer is, 'I just don't know yet.' From what I have read, Microsoft has put a lot of effort into this project and early reports are that they have done a pretty good job. The problem is that these early reports are coming from IT professionals that have the expertise to deal with any 'bumps in the road' they may encounter when installing this upgrade. There is also a belief that many of the people who already have this upgrade are holding off on installing it until they see what the fallout might be. There are already several programs that Microsoft has identified that seemingly do not work after installing this Service Pack, but most of those are programs that connect and/or interact to servers and server applications. I suspect that the average home user will not have a problem in this area. And, Microsoft has posted an article about how to re-configure Windows XP to make most of those work. Where I think the average user may run into problems is where they already have a firewall program installed and running on their computer. This is because the Service Pack will activate the internal Windows XP firewall by default, which would mean that those users that are already running a firewall would now have two firewalls running simultaneously. This may or may not cause interference between the two firewalls, but it is an area that I will be watching closely. At the present time, I am recommending that most people avoid downloading and installing SP2, which is available at some web sites for manual download already. By the time SP2 is available in a few weeks thru the automatic Windows Update feature, I think we will know more about any potential problems that it may cause. Ken Loomis, Consultant Windows, Macintosh, Internet, etc. Helping to make your technology experience more pleasant and profitable 619-275-6919 / KLoomis@BigPlanet.com Additional notes from Gini: 1. Microsoft has indicated that they will offer the SP2 update on a CD in the near future. If you currently have a dial-up modem connection to the Internet, you may want to consider this option since the SP2 download is fairly large. 2. I'll keep you informed via future issues of Net Happenings about when it is likely a good idea to install SP2. In addition, you will see occasional postings about this issue on Our Message Board at http://www.iteachyou.com (click Ask a Question). 3. If you currently have your Windows Update feature set to automatically download and install all critical updates, I'd suggest you change it so you will be notified before an installation occurs. - Click Start - Control Panel (or Start - Settings - Control Panel). - Click Switch to Classic View if you see it listed on the left side of your screen. - Double-click to open System. - Click Automatic Updates tab. - Click to place checkmark by Keep My Computer up to date. - Click to place a dot by 'Download the updates for me but let me choose when to install them.' - Click Apply and then OK. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Got a question? Interesting Sites YOUR PICTURE ON A REAL POSTAGE STAMP http://photo.stamps.com/ They are a little expensive at roughly $20 for twenty 37 cent stamps, but think how cool it would be to send your friends and family letters with your picture on the stamp. Or, to give a grandchild a sheet of stamps with their picture on it. (shared by Ken Loomis) 5 . . . Non-Nerdy Stats Did You Know? - In 1996, Americans bought only 12 inches of dental floss per capita. - Approximately 76 percent of house dust is made up of dead skin flakes. - In the United States, more than 25 percent of women's fashion dollars are spent on sizes 16 and up. - Americans spend more money on dog food every year than they spend on baby food. - It has been estimated that the typical American will spend an average of 2 years of his/her life reading newspapers. - The average American uses 12.4 gallons of water to take a shower which lasts, on the average, 10.4 minutes at an average temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit. - The average American will eat 35,000 cookies during their life span. 6 . . . Bits and Bytes of Humor A good piece of chocolate has about 200 calories. As I enjoy 2 servings per night, and a few more on weekends, I consume about 3,500 calories of chocolate in a week, which equals1 pound of weight per week. Therefore, in the last 4 years, I have had chocolate caloric intake of about 208 pounds, and I only weigh 165 pounds. So...without chocolate, I would have wasted away to nothing several months ago! I owe my life to chocolate. Your source for life-long learning
