HAVING YOUR OWN WEB ADDRESS

First a definition of terms:

Domain - a Web address; Note from Gini: mine is 'iteachyou.com';
the 'www' portion just indicates the name of the server at my
Web Host on which this domain is hosted

URL - Universal Resource Locator; complete Web address,
including the WWW protocol; mine is http://www.iteachyou.com;
this address then points to the Web Host (see below)

Web Host - company that acts as a landlord for your Website,
charging you varying amounts per month or year, depending on
services/features you want; many offer a variety of services
including web hosting, web design, registrar services, and more;
Note from Gini: I use Big Planet's hosting services which I
contract for through Ken Loomis -- kloomis@bigplanet.com
or (619) 275-6919

Registrar - company that acts as a broker for domain names
(for example, mine is iteachyou.com), offering to 'lease'
it to you for 1 or more years for a fee;
Note from Gini: I use NPSIS which costs about $13 per year
per domain -- http://www.npsis.com

Parking - Reserving a Web address for future use

Access Provider - the company (AOL, Cox, EarthLink, etc.)
you pay usually $20 to $40 per month so you can send and
receive email, surf the Web, and more; some of these
companies also provide Web Hosting services but it isn't
necessary to use an Access Provider as your Web Host.

Now, the explanation of how these all work together...

If you paid the domain registration fee (usually $10 or more
per year), then you can usually leave it parked at the domain
registrar's service until you are ready to 'publish' your Website
content for the world to see. At that time you will need to have
your domain hosted by a Web Hosting company which usually
costs around $25 or more per month.

A domain registrar often offers hosting services and hopes that
you will use their hosting service when you are ready to
upload (publish) your Website content. However, you often
will have different domain registrar and hosting companies.

The domain registrar usually charges $10 or more per year and
pays a portion of that fee to another company who keeps the
'master' database of addresses (so no duplicates are sold).

Therefore, I would be wary of any registrar who offers to reserve
a domain absolutely for no charge for any period of time. If they do,
then they are possibly listing themselves as the owner of the
domain which means that you don't really own it yourself so you
COULD be faced with ownership and/or pricing challenges in the
future. Read the fine print carefully -- and use only domain
registrars that have been recommended by friends who have
had no problems like this.

No matter who you select for a Registrar or a Web Host, you can
always change to a different company after the contract period
expires. Always contact a new Registrar or Web Host before
canceling your relationship with your old one. Having your own
URL allows for portability, much as a 'vanity' license plate
can be switched and registered to a different vehicle you own
in the future.

Always keep track of expiration dates -- particularly of your
domain -- so that you maintain consistent ownership of a domain
you have worked hard to develop and promote.

7 . . . Bits and Bytes of Humor

At a fancy reception, a middle-aged woman asked a young man
to guess her age.

'You must have some idea,' she urged when he hesitated.

'I have several ideas,' he admitted with a smile. 'The trouble is
that I don't know whether to make it 10 years younger because of
your looks or 10 years older because of your wisdom.'
