Go to http://www.iteachyou.com Click Ask a Question >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> OPTIONS FOR CLOSING WINDOWS XP (excerpted from article in Dummies e-tips at http://etips.dummies.com) The Windows XP Shut Down menu (Start-Turn Off... or Start-Shut Down...) offers several options now, as you can see in the following list: * Shut Down -- Click here, and Windows saves your work, prepares your computer to be shut off, and automatically turns off the power. Use this option when you want to completely turn off your system. Some people do this at the end of each day and some people leave their system on all the time, perhaps just turning off the monitor between uses. * Restart -- Here, Windows saves your work and prepares your computer to be shut off. However, it then restarts your computer. Use this option when installing new software, changing settings, or trying to stop Windows from doing something weird. * Logoff -- If your Windows system is set up for multiple users with different passwords, then the Logoff command closes your session but leaves Windows open for another user to access his/her account. * Standby -- Save your work before choosing this one; it doesn't save your work automatically. Instead, it lets your computer doze for a bit to save power, but it usually wakes up your system at the touch of the mouse or button on the keyboard. * Hibernate -- Only offered on some computers, this works much like Shut down. It saves your work and turns off your computer. However, when turned on again, your computer presents your desktop just as you left it: Open programs and windows appear in the same place. The Hibernate command takes all of your currently open information and writes it to the hard drive in one big chunk. Then, to re-create your desktop, it reads that big chunk and places it back on your desktop. It's not as safe as shutting down your computer. Note from Gini: I personally never use this option -- there's a high risk of losing some work or destabilizing Windows. Don't ever turn off your computer unless you've first used the Shut Down command from the Start button. Windows needs to prepare itself for the shutdown, or it may accidentally damage some of your important information. TYPING EURO MONEY AND OTHER SPECIAL SYMBOLS While holding down the Alt key, type 0128 (Alt+0128) on your numeric keypad. This works in Word and any other Windows-based program. Although difficult to spell out in detail here, you can also create a macro within Word and some other applications that will allow you to create the Euro symbol with fewer keystrokes. To see a longer list of special symbols you can use, go to... http://www.iteachyou.com/web/accents.htm >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Got a question? News You Can Use GOING WIRELESS AT HOME If you have ever wanted to roam around your house with your computer notebook and remain connected to the Internet, a wireless router is the solution. If a wireless network is appealing but you're intimidated by the thought of setting it up, Intel has a useful, step-by-step guide written by an 'average' guy at: http://www.intel.com/personal/do_more/digital_home/home.htm or http://snipurl.com/72mm (excerpted from Knight Ridder News Service article in the Personal Technology section of the June 14, 2004 issue of San Diego Union-Tribune) 5 . . . Interesting Sites YOUR NEXT HOUSE? (shared by Kim Komando) http://www.loftcube.net/ Imagine living on the rooftop of a high-rise building in a lightweight cube measuring only 40-square meters. Believe it or not, it can be yours for about $65,000. A German studio designs and builds portable cubes for hip nomadic urbanites. The loftcubes look really cool, although they might be too small if you have more than two people in the house. RELAXING SOUNDS http://www.iserenity.com/environments.htm Each sound may take a couple of minutes to fully load. My personal favorite is the Roaring Ocean. 6 . . . Non-Nerdy Stats SAFE TO TRAVEL? From an excellent *free* newsletter (E-zine) offered at http://www.seniorresource.com Still reluctant to make plans to travel because of the state of things around the world? Well take note of these facts shared in Conde Nast Traveler, Feb. 2003. They are based upon one-year historical odds for an average American and one year more (2003 to 2004) isn’t going to change the odds much one way or the other. Fatality due to: - Heart disease: 1 in 300 - Cancer: 1 in 509 - A car accident: 1 in 18,800 - A fall: 1 in 20,700 - Pedestrian accident:1 in 45,200 - Lightning: 1 in 4,260,000 - Bus accident: 1 in 4,300,000 - Train accident: 1 in 5,050,000 - Airline accident (on US carriers) 1 in 8,450,000 - Terrorist Attack: 1 in 9,270,000 More than half of the 348 terrorist attacks in 2001 were bombings on an oil pipeline in Columbia so if you don’t travel to Columbia your chance of dying in a terrorist attack is cut in half. And note that 'people who reported taking no vacation for 5 years are at a much higher risk of heart disease' than those who took more frequent vacations. Of course, generally speaking none of us is an 'average Americans' in light of all of our exceptional characteristics and unique experiences, so plan to take vacations using your head and staying alert! 7 . . .
