FINDING GOOD AIRFARES Finding a good fare isn't about a website or two, it's about doing your homework. Start by checking out the available fares on a website like Travelocity. http://www.travelocity.com where you can see some of the rules. For example, the best fares are currently limited to returns by the 30th of May, or a maximum 7-day stay. Next, check out such website such as http://www.farechase.com which searches through many listings, when you have a particular day. Don't forget to check out http://www.iflyswa.com since they aren't generally listed elsewhere. And http://www.flights.com for charters and consolidators. You can try http://www.expedia.com (Price Flight Matcher) and http://www.priceline.com if you are willing to live by their rules - no refunds, no flight time choices, no changes. If you find a good fare, check directly on the airlines website. Check for discount coupons. You have to do a lot of work to get a great fare. For example, in March, I fly from Albany to Las Vegas for less than $200 return, taxes included. But I did all the work to find it, there are no shortcuts. 4 . . . TIPS AND TRICKS . . . MAKING A CD UNREADABLE PRIOR TO DISCARDING IT To make a CD unreadable, either break it or use a very sharp object to make a deep scratch on the top (coated) side. The data on a CD is stored on the underside of the very thin layer of material on the topside of a CD and it is read from the bottom through heavy plastic-- the primary material of a CD. If you can see through the scratch, the CD has become unreadable. Unless the CD is full, the data will likely be closest to the outer edge. ELIMINATE CONFIRMATION MESSAGE WHEN DELETING A FILE To eliminate the need to confirm each file deletion, do the following: - Get to Windows Desktop. - Right-click on Recycle Bin icon. - Click Properties. - Click Global tab in dialog box. - Click to remove checkmark by Display Delete Confirmation Dialog Box. - Click OK. 5 . . . BITS AND BYTES OF HUMOR . . . Murphy's Top 10 Laws of Computing 1. When computing, whatever happens, behave as though you meant it to happen. 2. When you get to the point where you really understand your computer, it's probably obsolete. 3. The first place to look for information is in the section of the manual where you'd least expect to find it. 4. When the going gets tough, upgrade. 5. For every action, there is an equal and opposite malfunction. 6. To err is human... to blame your computer for your mistakes is even more human, it's downright natural. 7. He who laughs last, probably has a back-up. 8. The number one cause of computer problems is computer solutions. 9. A complex system that doesn't work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine. 10. A computer program will always do what you tell it to do, but rarely what you want it to do. Your source for life-long learning
