The message indicated that unable to open WMP due to unknown error. There is a patch listed today that is supposed to fix the problem. I down loaded and installed it, but no such luck. I did a System Restore in Win XP back to the 15th of April. This restored my system and WMP is now working. The two files in question were renamed during the restore to cryptsvd(3).dll and cryptsvc(4).dll. Note from Gini: Based on Dick's negative experience with the usually-reliable critical updates, you probably should wait a bit until Microsoft solves the problem and issues yet another patch. Non-Nerdy Stats FASCINATING... If you sometimes feel that you're the last person on your block to become Internet-savvy, you'll probably be amazed by the following… Results from a survey (Pew Internet and American Life Project) conducted by non-profit, non-partisan Pew Charitable Trusts, indicate the following: - 80 million American adults (about 42 percent of the adult population) say they do not use the Internet. - About 25 percent of Americans have never been online and don't know many others who use the Internet. - 20 percent of non-Internet users live in wired homes and yet remain offline. - 17 percent of the current group of non-users formerly used the Internet but no longer do. - Over 25 percent of current Internet users report that at one time or another in their online lives, they stayed off the Internet for an extended period of time. - About 27 percent of non-Internet users say they know almost no one who goes online. - About 40 percent of non-users think they will go online some day; 56 percent say they won't. According to Amanda Lenhart, Research Specialist at the Pew Internet Project and author of the new report The Ever-Shifting Internet Population, 'It's too simple to talk about a digital divide based exclusively on problems with access when it is now clear that access issues change from month to month for lots of Americans. A surprisingly large number don't want to be connected even though they have tasted what online life is like or live in a house where the Internet is literally in the next room.'
