PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS CRITICAL UPDATE
(shared by Dick Lennon)

I installed the two Windows Critical Updates (811493 and 817297)
and it broke my Windows Media Player 9.0. The message indicated
that unable to open WMP due to unknown error. There is a patch
listed today that is supposed to fix the problem. I down loaded and
installed it, but no such luck.

I did a System Restore in Win XP back to the 15th of April. This
restored my system and WMP is now working. The two files in
question were renamed during the restore to cryptsvd(3).dll and
cryptsvc(4).dll.

Note from Gini: Based on Dick's negative experience with the
usually-reliable critical updates, you probably should wait a bit
until Microsoft solves the problem and issues yet another patch.

TERMINOLOGIES DEMYSTIFIED

A browser is a software program, like Internet Explorer and
Netscape, that allow you to access Websites (addresses) on the
Internet -- such as Yahoo.com, Amazon.com, Microsoft.com,
ITeachYou.com, RedCross.org, Whitehouse.gov, Parliment.uk, etc.

Internet Service Provider -- a company you pay $0 to $50 per
month to in order to access the Internet at varying speeds.

Website -- a collection of webpages on the Internet that can be
accessed with a browser if you have an account with an Internet
Service Provider (or uses someone else's account).

Yahoo.com is a 'portal' Website -- one that offers a good starting
point for further exploring on the World Wide Web -- searching,
email, maps, shopping, finance, and much more. Yahoo is often
referred to as a 'search engine' but is really a Directory or Index.
Google, Lycos, AltaVista, and others are true search engines.
At Yahoo.com you MAY also have an Web-based email account
that allows you to access your email from any computer anywhere
in the world that is connected to the Internet.

Outlook -- a software program owned by Microsoft that allows
you to send and receive electronic messages with others who have
access to the Internet. Outlook comes in 2 flavors -- Outlook Express
which is for email only and Outlook Pro which also includes contact
management capabilities, calendaring, and the ability to integrate
easily with Word and other programs. Other email programs include
Eudora, Netscape Mail (part of the Netscape browser), and a few more.

A cookie is a file that's written to your browser's folder on your
hard drive that generally contains info about you that you entered --
for example when registering for a site like the New York Times or
when accumulating items in a 'shopping cart' at Amazon.com.

MICROSOFT PLANS TOILETS WITH WEB ACCESS
Seattle (AP) 5/03 - The iLoo being developed by the MSN
division of Microsoft in Britain is a standard portable toilet
(a 'loo' to the English) with a wireless keyboard and extending,
height-adjustable plasma screen in front of the seat.

There would also be a 'Hotmail station' with waterproof keyboard
and plasma screen on the outside for those waiting in line.

MSN officials say they're negotiating for the manufacture of
toilet paper imprinted with Web addresses that users may not
have tried.

6 . . . Non-Nerdy Stats

FASCINATING...

If you sometimes feel that you're the last person on your block
to become Internet-savvy, you'll probably be amazed by the
following…

Results from a survey (Pew Internet and American Life Project)
conducted by non-profit, non-partisan Pew Charitable Trusts,
indicate the following:

- 80 million American adults (about 42 percent of the adult
population) say they do not use the Internet.
- About 25 percent of Americans have never been online and don't
know many others who use the Internet.
- 20 percent of non-Internet users live in wired homes and yet
remain offline.
- 17 percent of the current group of non-users formerly used the
Internet but no longer do.
- Over 25 percent of current Internet users report that at one time
or another in their online lives, they stayed off the Internet for an
extended period of time.
- About 27 percent of non-Internet users say they know almost
no one who goes online.
- About 40 percent of non-users think they will go online some day;
56 percent say they won't.

According to Amanda Lenhart, Research Specialist at the Pew
Internet Project and author of the new report The Ever-Shifting
Internet Population, 'It's too simple to talk about a digital divide
based exclusively on problems with access when it is now clear
that access issues change from month to month for lots of
Americans. A surprisingly large number don't want to be
connected even though they have tasted what online life is like
or live in a house where the Internet is literally in the next room.'
