Tips and Tricks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Got a question? Post it on Our Message Board. Go to http://www.iteachyou.com Click Ask a Question >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> In the continuing series of tips to help you keep yourself and your computer more secure... FIREWALLS Everyone who is accessing the Internet should consider having a firewall software application or a hardware firewall router that blocks (and reports) unwanted outside intrusions. A firewall is a security system that prevents outsiders (hackers) from accessing or placing files on your computer. Without such protection, a hacker could possibly place a virus on your system, install malicious programs that can damage your computer, read passwords, or use your computer without your knowledge as a springboard for an attack on someone else's computer -- making your system look like the attacker in any ensuing investigation. In addition, hackers can steal your identity. Since a firewall does slow down your connection and system, some folks with dialup connections to the Internet ($15 to 25 per month) have chosen to skip having a firewall since their Internet connection is only open for short bursts of time. This is a choice that still places a dialup user at risk. All broadband DSL and Cable connections ($35 to $50 per month) should have firewall protection since these types of connections are open to the Internet each time the computer is booted up. A good software firewall option is Zone Alarm ( Norton and McAfee also produce software firewall programs. Mac users can consider Intego's Net Barrier or Norton Personal Firewall for Macintosh. The Windows XP operating system also includes a software firewall, but it's turned off by default -- and is considered by many security experts to be a bit lame. To turn it on: Go to the Windows Desktop; right-click on My Network Places; click Properties; right-click on the reference to your Internet connection; click Properties; click Advanced; click to place a check mark next to Protect My Computer. Once you install a software firewall, you will need to 'train' it to properly police your system. After the installation you will see small dialog boxes appear, asking if you want to allow this particular program to access the Internet. Your firewall program will then remember your response during future connections. You can always review and/or change firewall program settings any time. You should plan to obtain a new version of your firewall about once a year. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Got a question? Bits and Bytes of Humor When the wise company president learned that his employees were tanking up on no-trace vodka martinis during their lunch hours, he issued the following memo: To all employees: If you must drink during your lunch hours, please drink whiskey. It is better for our customers to know you're drunk than to think you're stupid. ----- Scene in a restaurant... 1st customer: I'll have tea. 2nd customer: Me, too. And be sure the glass is clean! (The waiter exits and then returns after a while.) Waiter: Two teas. Who asked for the clean glass? Your source for life-long learning
