BUYING A COMPUTER

I am frequently asked in class 'What computer should I buy?'
My answer usually starts with 'It depends on… what you will
use your computer for …what your budget is …how long you
plan to keep your computer …what equipment do you own that
you plan to use with this new computer …and much more.'

To help you with this important decision, I can offer 3 options:

1. Print out and answer the questions on the 1-page form I've
provided at
Take it with you when you go computer shopping.

2. Post additional questions you have on Our Message Board
at (click Ask a Question).

3. Attend one of my 'How to Buy the RIGHT Computer'
free classes. The next one is scheduled for Monday, June 2
from 1-5 pm at North City CET. You can call 858-627-2545
for more details.

LABEL ALL CORDS AND CONNECTORS THAT
PLUG INTO THE BACK OF YOUR COMPUTER

Wrap a piece of heavy tape around each cord and
cable and use a permanent marker to label each
with a letter or number. Then use the marker to
write the corresponding letter or number next to
this cord's connection point on the system unit.

This will help you if a cord becomes disconnected
or if you need to remove cables and cords in order
to move your computer.

GET ADDITIONAL CLIPART FROM MICROSOFT

The following works with most versions of Office but
only if you have access to the Internet:
a. Click INSERT-PICTURE-CLIPART.
b. Click Clips Online.
c. Follow directions on screen.

A Japanese toy maker claims to have developed a gadget that
translates dog barks into human language and plans to begin
selling the product -- under the name Bowlingual --
in U.S. pet stores, gift shops and retail outlets this summer.

6 . . . Non-Nerdy Stats

DID YOU KNOW?

- A baby gray whale drinks enough milk to fill more than
2,000 bottles a day.

- Rattlesnakes gather in groups to sleep through the winter.
Sometimes up to 1,000 of them will coil up together to keep warm.

- It takes an average of 345 squirts to yield a gallon of milk from
a cow's udder.

- A cow gives nearly 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime.

- You could milk about six cows per hour by hand, but with
modern machinery, you can milk up to 100 cows per hour.

- It takes approximately 69,000 venom extractions from the
coral snake to fill a 1-pint container.

7 . . . Bits and Bytes of Humor

In view of K-Mart's recent announcement about closing 350+ stores,
we need to be reminded to the chain's valiant effort last year to
team up with Gallo Winery of Modesto, Calif., to produce and
market a new wine at an affordable price

These were the top 15 suggested names for K-Mart Wine:
- Chateau Traileur Doublewide
- White Trashfindel
- Big Red Gulp
- Grape Expectations
- Chef Boyardeaux
- Peanut Noir
- Blue Light Special Nun
- Martha Stewart's Sour Grapes
- Can't Believe It's Not Vinegar!
- World Championship Wriesling
- Nasti Spumante
