TIPS AND TRICKS . . . NOISE ON YOUR SYSTEM If you start hearing a noise in the system unit, DON'T ignore it. It is possible that one of the following is failing: - CPU fan - Power supply fan - Power supply motor When the noise stops is when the serious problems start. SYSTEM RUNNING HOT If your computer is running very hot, check the following: -- Be sure your computer has plenty of ventilation on all sides -- particularly the sides and back -- where most vents are. -- Be sure your power supply fan is working. To test the fan, roll up a small piece of newspaper and stick it between the fan vents. If you hear the fan spinning against the paper, you're fine. -- Keep cats from lying on top of your monitor's air vents--if possible. -- If possible, place your tower on a table or desk; if not, place a board under it to lift it off the carpet. COMPUTER COMPONENT STOPS WORKING If a component connected to (or inside) your computer stops working, try the following: -- Open Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager. -- Scroll down to the name of the device and note that it likely has a red or yellow X or exclamation mark beside it. -- Double-click on the name of the device to see the properties dialog box. -- Follow the directions on the screen to 'remove' the device. -- Re-start your computer to let Plug and Play establish a new connection with this device. If this doesn't work, try the following: -- Turn your system off and remove the case. -- Carefully remove the card or cables for the device. -- Blow canned air to clear out debris from the slot or cable openings. -- Reseat cards/cables. -- Turn your system on and see if the problem has been resolved. -- If not, contact tech support for the specific device that doesn't seem to work. BITS AND BYTES OF HUMOR . . . 7 Rules of Housekeeping (submitted by Barbara Hicks) 1. Don't bother repainting. Simply scribble lightly over a dirty wall with an assortment of crayons, and try to muster a glint of tears as you say, 'Junior did this the week before that unspeakable accident ... I haven't had the heart to clean it.' 2. Dust bunnies can evolve into dust rhinos when disturbed. Rename the area under the couch 'The Galapagos Islands' and claim an ecological exemption. 3. Layers of dirty film on windows and screens provide a helpful filter against harmful and aging rays from the sun. Call it an SPF factor of 5 and leave it alone. 4. Cobwebs artfully draped over lampshades reduces the glare from the bulb, thereby creating a romantic atmosphere. If your husband points out that the light fixtures need dusting, simply look affronted and exclaim, 'What? And spoil the mood?' 5. In a pinch, you can always claim that the haphazard tower of unread magazines and newspapers next to your chair provides the valuable Feng Shui aspect of a tiger, thereby reducing your vulnerability. Roll your eyes when you say this. 6. Explain the mound of pet hair brushed up against the doorways by claiming you are collecting it there to use for stuffing hand sewn play animals for underprivileged children. 6. If unexpected company is coming, pile everything unsightly into one room and close the door. As you show your guests through your tidy home, rattle the door knob vigorously, fake a growl and say, 'I'd love you to see our den, but Fluffy hates to be disturbed and the shots are SO expensive.' 7. If dusting is really out of control, simply place a showy urn on the coffee table and insist, 'This is where Grandma wanted us to scatter her ashes.' ------------------------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have a question or comment about anything contained in this e-newsletter, please post your question or comment on my Message Board at http://www.iteachyou.com/ Feel free to pass this newsletter on to friends and encourage them to subscribe to receive their own copy.
