News You Can Use CREDIT CARD FRAUD (shared by Ken Loomis) In my experience with credit card fraud and Internet scams, I am reminded again and again of a couple of simple things to remember to protect yourself from these things. 1) Legitimate credit card companies and banks will NEVER contact you by email or phone and ask for any kind of information, including, but not limited to, name, address, phone number, username, password, credit/debit card number, account number, security code. If you are ever contacted and asked for information like this, ask for an incident reference number and tell them you will contact the company yourself using the contact information or your credit/debit card, monthly statement, etc. 2) NEVER trust a link in an email that asks you to login in to a secure account, i.e., eBay, PayPal, VISA, MasterCard, bank account, etc. Legitimate requests to login in to your account will always tell you what links to follow on the company's website to access the information you need. To access their website, use your normal procedure to access their web site, for example, typing the web address into your browser or using a proven bookmark/favorite. Most people think these scams are being perpetrated by petty criminals, but in reality, Internet and credit card fraud is a huge industry overseas. The profit potential is enormous and attracts the potential of some very talented, though unscrupulous, criminals and criminal organizations. Their job is to appear legitimate in order to gain your trust in emails and phone calls, and they are very good at what they do. Unfortunately, as the economy gets worse, scams like this will be on the rise, so it is even more important now than ever that we all keep our guard up. 6 . . .
