Tips and Tricks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Got a question? Post it on Our Message Board. Go to http://www.iteachyou.com Click Ask a Question >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DEALING WITH SPAM Note: This tip is rather long but hopefully offers you a variety of choices for dealing with this annoyance. There are many anti-spam software programs out there -- none of which work 100 percent. At best you get maybe 60-70 percent. Even the best ones are still a 'Band-Aid' to the problem -- a little like trimming your rose bush without gloves -- knowing you have iodine and Band-Aids in the house to patch yourself up. If you do use spam filtering software, be sure the filtered messages are transferred to a special folder other than your email's Trash folder so you can review them periodically to see if a message you truly want was filtered out by over-aggressive spam software -- or your own filtering techniques. Following are some ways to deflect spam and reduce the chance of having your e-mail address used by spammers: 1. Set filters in your email program to block specific senders and/or specific language in a message. 2. Avoid providing your primary email address when subscribing to print publications, at trade shows, and in other situation where you are unsure of how it will/could be used. 3. Read online and offline forms you complete carefully and check or uncheck boxes as necessary so you aren't inadvertently giving your OK to receive mail from others. 4. Many spammers do a 'dictionary attack' technique to address Spam email. If your email username contains a combination of letters and numbers it is more likely to survive such a dictionary attack. 5. If you prefer, you can also set your email filters so you only receive email from specific email address. This is called a 'reverse filter' or a 'white list.' Note that it can backfire as some of your friends try to communicate with you if you've forgotten to include them in your list of emails to accept. Also, some friends use multiple email addresses. 6. Avoid signing up for services that promise to block spam for you; most are ineffective or cause an increase in the amount of Spam you will receive. Even the Direct Marketing Association's 'Do Not Mail' list has largely been a failure -- mainly because most spammers ignore it. 7. Check spam-blocking utilities such as MailWasher at http://www.mailwasher.com 8. Never respond to Spam -- it just confirms that you read at least part of their message. And, of course, never order any product or service as a result of Spam you receive. 9. Never order any product or service as a result of Spam you receive. 10. Modify your e-mail address when you post to Discussion Forums that don't require pre-registration. On Discussion Forums that allow you to manually enter an e-mail address, add a word to the end. For example, instead of using 'john@aol.com,' use johnNOSPAM@aolREMOVE.com' in the e-mail address field. This technique will keep software programs that automatically 'harvest' e-mail addresses from listing a legitimate e-mail address but will still be recognizable to Discussion Forum participants as the e-mail address of 'john@aol.com.' 11. Use a *FREE* Web-based e-mail account for Discussion Forum postings. Although this trick won't actually reduce the number of unsolicited spam messages you receive, it will allow you to keep them out of your primary e-mail account that you use on a daily basis. To do this, open a *FREE* Web-based e-mail account with Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/ and then use your Hotmail address only for postings to Internet discussion groups. If the amount of unsolicited e-mail you receive in this new account becomes too annoying, merely abandon this account and open another one with Hotmail. There are also other *FREE* e-mail options available. 12. Use an email alias service such as Mailshell at http://www.mailshell.com/ 13. Be sure that your email program doesn't automatically confirm 'Read Receipt' requests. This is a trick spammers use to confirm valid email addresses. In Outlook Express you can change settings as following: ... Click TOOLS - OPTIONS - EMAIL OPTIONS BUTTON - TRACKING OPTIONS. ... Change settings as needed so you never automatically send anything. 14. Watch for new tricks spammers are using to entice you to open and read their message, such as... ...They start the subject line with 're' so you will think it is a reply to an email message you sent out previously. ...They include in the subject 'Returned Mail' or 'Mail Undeliverable' so you'll open it, thinking it was something you had tried to send that didn't make it. ...They use a very friendly subject line that sounds like something your friend may have sent. ...They adjust date settings before mailing so message has an older date so their message may appear at the top of your inbox list. 15. You can learn more about analyzing the header of an email message you receive by visiting http://abuse.msu.edu/email-tracking.html In addition, http://spam.abuse.net/ contains many hints about dealing with spam. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Got a question?
