Tips and Tricks USING DRIVE IMAGE FOR HARD DISK DRIVE BACKUP (shared by Lutz Winkler) I am not specifically promoting Drive Image since there is at least one other product (Ghost by Symantec) with the same capabilities. The main advantage of having a complete system backup is that it eliminates the need to reinstall drivers (which somehow often get mislaid) and, of course, any software that would get wiped out if a clean reinstall (meaning after reformatting the hard drive) is performed. Both Drive Image and Ghost now include the ability to copy directly to CD - no need to involve your CD burning utility - and allow 'spanning' if the system backup requires more than the 650 or 700 MB limit of CDs which it normally would. Backing up to another hard drive is, of course, also made possible by either Drive Image or Ghost but I don't recommend it. The second hard drive, as reliable as hard drives are in this day and age, if installed in your computer and left running all the time, is just as much subject to failure as the primary drive. It is best to put the backup on CDs if you have a burner or, if you don't, put the backup drive in a mobile rack and only insert it when a backup is to be made. The two programs mentioned above are designed to back up the contents of entire drives, they do not allow you to select individual folders and thus, for frequent backups of your data, you should follow your normal routine. Note from Gini: This current version of Drive Image sells for $69.95 at most retail stores; WorldStart.com normally sells it for $34.97. US shipping is FREE! Here's the link for more info: http://www.worldstart.com/store/drive-image-2002.htm TURN OFF THE OFFICE ASSISTANT IN MICROSOFT WORD - Click HELP-MICROSOFT WORD HELP. - Click 'Options' button in the 'What would you like to do' bubble. - Click Options tab in Office Assistant dialog box. - Click to remove checkmark by Use the Office Assistant. - Click OK. STOP PRINT JOB A few printers, (usually laser printers) have an online/offline button. With all other printers, choose one of the following methods: - Click Pause button is one exists. - Stop the print job through the Control Panel (usually still prints several pages already in printer's buffer). - Remove the paper from the paper tray. Restart Windows to try to clear the print buffer before you put the paper back in the tray. - Pull the plug on the printer. This usually jams the printer but the jam usually can be cleared. Don't use this option unless absolutely necessary. Again restart Windows to try to clear the print buffer. 4 . . . News You Can Use ROCKVILLE, Md.
