Tips and Tricks GETTING LISTED IN SEARCH ENGINES There are 2 basic types of 'search engines' ... 1. True search engines such as Google, Lycos, AltaVista, and many more. 2. Directories (often called search engines) such as Yahoo and a few more. Search engines 'spider' the Internet and will probably eventually find your site as they link through other sites to find you. Or, if you want to be found sooner, you can register with them and they will spider your site sooner. Most do not charge for this process but this has been changing with some over time. With directories, you need to register (submit) your site with them. Yahoo is the 'Mother of all Directories.' It now costs $295 per year to register a business site with Yahoo. Other directories (such as www.dmoz.org) are free (at this time anyway). With both search engines and directories it is important to read their submission guidelines carefully. Sometimes the link to the guidelines is hard to find but it is usually toward the bottom of their home page. For example, to reach guidelines for... Yahoo: - Go to http://www.yahoo.com. - Scroll to the bottom of the page. - Click How to Suggest a Site. Google: - Go to http://www.google.com - Click Jobs, Press, and Stuff - Click Submitting Your Site. ..... INTERNET CONNECTION SPEED At times the Internet in general, and some sites specifically, do slow down. Lots of reasons for that, but one common reason is traffic. Just like a highway for automobiles, information (rather than cars) slows down on the Information Highway when there is a lot of traffic. You can test your Internet connection speed here: The results of a single test should not be considered conclusive. If you suspect your Internet connection is not performing optimally, you might want to do multiple tests over about a week at different times of day. Record the time of the test and the results for all the tests. Then contact your Internet Service Provider to discuss the results. They may be able to give you suggestions for optimizing your connection speed. 3 . . . Bits and Bytes of Humor PHILOSOPHY FOR SENIOR CITIZENS - Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. - Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. - When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of algebra. - You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. - The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. - I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top. - Yeah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. - If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you are old. - Old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald they don't recognize you.
