4 . . . . NON-NERDY STATS . . .

FROM NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, DECEMBER 2001
(shared by Sol Schumer)

-- It took 100 years to connect the first billion people by phone,
and only 10 years to connect the second billion.

-- People who use the Internet:
US = 293 per 1,000 people
Africa = 0.3 per 1,000 people

-- The first copper undersea cable was laid across the English
channel in 1850, and across the Atlantic ocean (successfully)
in 1865 (for telegraph). In 1956 the first (copper) telephone cable
spanned the Atlantic ocean. Not until the mid-1990s was fiber optic
cable used across the oceans for telephone calls (probably driven
by the Internet).

-- There is an estimated 35 million miles of fiber optic cable laid
in the US; 90 percent of the land cables are 'dark' (not in use).

-- The latest transatlantic fiber optic cable is rated at 2.4 terabits
per second, which equates to transmitting in one second 100 hours
of digital video or 30 million phone calls.

5 . . . . TIPS AND TRICKS . . .

CLEARING A HARD DISK DRIVE BEFORE YOU PASS IT ON

Since deleting files on your hard disk drive doesn't really eliminate
them completely, one way to be sure you have truly deleted all files *
that may contain personal information is to re-format your hard
disk drive. Of course, this also eliminates your operating system
(probably Windows) and all applications that had been installed
on the hard drive. In other words, it erases EVERYTHING on the
hard disk drive.

To accomplish this...

- Click Start - Shut Down - Restart in MS-DOS Mode - OK.
- Your screen should now be black and contain a short string
of text called a Command Prompt. It will likely say 'C:\Windows>'
or similar.
- Type 'CD\' (without the quotes) to return to the 'C Prompt'
which should look like the following: C:\>
- If you don't see C:\> as described above,
type 'CD..' (without the quotes) to return to the C Prompt.
- At the C Prompt, type 'FORMAT C:/S' (without the quotes)
and press ENTER on your keyboard.
- Press Y (for Yes) to proceed with reformatting the hard disk drive
as a bootable drive.
- Press the ENTER key when prompted to include a volume label.

Remember: Your hard disk drive will now be completely blank.
The next owner will need to install an operating system and programs.

* Although it would be possible for someone with expensive tools
and considerable time to reconstruct the data on a re-formatted hard
disk drive, from a practical perspective, it isn't practical. Your only
absolute sure-fire method of preventing this is to remove and destroy
the hard disk drive which makes what's left of the computer of little
use to someone else.

MONITORS AND MAGNETIC FIELDS

Many speakers contain powerful magnets that can affect your
monitor's display if you place the speaker too close to the monitor.
If you start seeing a distorted, discolored display, try moving the
speakers a few inches away. Other electrical appliances placed
close to the monitor, such as a fan, can also cause flicker and
other distractions on a monitor.

6 . . . . BITS AND BYTES OF HUMOR . . .

DEEP THOUGHTS:

-- Worrying works! 90 percent of the things I worry about
never happen.

-- Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead
of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either.
Just leave me alone.

-- It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a
warning to others.

-- It is far more impressive when others discover your good
qualities without your help.

-- Good judgment comes from bad experience and a lot of that
comes from bad judgment.

-- Never test the depth of the water with both feet.

-- If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple
of car payments.

-- If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again,
it was probably worth it.
