3 . . . Tips and Tricks

In a prior issue of Net Happenings and in several classes I've
recommended the free version of Ad-Aware by Lavasoftusa.com
for detecting and removing spyware, adware, and scumware
entities from your computer. Although many of these 'ware'
thingies that are found on a computer are not very invasive,
everyone should still be concerned about the most major of the
threats -- identity theft.

In the past, many security experts have recommended using
the free Ad-Aware program that is downloadable from
Lavasoftusa.com.

However, recent articles I've read are now recommending against
this free program since, apparently, Lavasoftusa.com isn't
releasing the periodic updates necessary to keep this product really
useful to everyone.

To read more -- and to get recommendations of better spyware
protection utilities, go to the source of one of my favorite
e-newsletters at http://www.langa.com and read Section 3 of
the 1/13/03 issue.

Personally, I'm giving PestPatrol ($40) a try right now --
http://www.pestpatrol.com You can download a demo version
of PestPatrol for free that will allow you to look for but not
delete spyware components.

So far it has found many low-risk adware components.

5 . . . Non-Nerdy Stats

DID YOU KNOW?
- The numbers on opposite sites of a die always add up to 7.
- It takes 1 ton of ore to produce 1 gold wedding ring.
- The leech has 32 brains -- 31 more than a human
- Every hour, nearly 12,500 puppies are born in the United States.
- It has been estimated that the typical American will spend an
average of 2 years of his/her life reading newspapers.
- An ant can survive for up to 2 weeks underwater.
- The height of the 984-foot-tall Eiffel Tower varies, depending on
the temperature, by as much as 6 inches.

6 . . . Bits and Bytes of Humor

More great things about getting older.....

-- People call at 9 pm and ask, 'Did I wake you?'

-- People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.

-- There is nothing left to learn the hard way.

-- You enjoy hearing about other people's operations.

-- You have a party and the neighbors don't even realize it.

-- You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks
into the room.

-- You sing along with elevator music.

-- Your eyes won't get much worse.

-- You can't remember who sent you this list.
