Here's a little part of US history which makes you go hmmmm... Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. Both presidents were shot on a Friday. Both presidents were shot in the head. Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy. Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln. Both were assassinated by Southerners. Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908. John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, . . . . was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, . . . . was born in 1939. Both assassins were known by their 3 names. Names of both assassins are composed of fifteen letters. Lincoln was shot in the theater named 'Ford.' Kennedy was shot in a car called 'Lincoln.' Booth ran from the theater and was caught in a warehouse. Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater. Booth and Oswald were assassinated prior to their trials. And here's the kicker... A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland. A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe. 5 . . . TIPS AND TRICKS . . . VIRUS UPDATE -- IMPORTANT*** We've entered a new era of virus/worm challenges. I'll use word 'virus' here to simplify the instructions below. Many newer e-mail programs open a preview pane that allows the user to view the e-mail message without actually opening it. With older e-mail programs, you can read the e-mail message merely by opening it from your IN box. Both methods are now susceptible to viruses. In other words, the creator of the virus can now embed code in the body of an e-mail message in such a way that by merely READING the e-mail message, you can trigger the damage the virus is intended to do. Luckily, major anti-virus software vendors (Norton, McAfee, PC-Cillin) are on top of this and have included better virus detection methods within their programs that can (almost always) automatically detect such an obscure virus -- IF YOU KEEP YOUR VIRUS DEFINITIONS UP TO DATE. With these same newer a/v programs, it is possible and easy to set them so any and all virus definitions will AUTOMATICALLY BE UPDATED and included in the proper folder on your hard drive every time you are on the Internet. This process happens in the background. Yes, it does use up some 'resources' but it's become quite essential now that over 200 viruses are being released into the world each week. The virus definition updates are like 'booster shots' for your a/v program so it can properly detect the newest viruses. While the recent 'Badtrans' worm has been only a problem for Outlook users, the same or similar could easily happen with other e-mail programs in the future. Outlook is frequently attacked -- not because it is a bad program -- but it is probably the most-commonly-used e-mail program in the U.S. and, therefore, allows virus creators (jerks) to possibly do more damage. MY SUGGESTION: - Get one of the following antivirus programs: Norton 2001 or newer, McAfee VirusScan 6 or newer, PC-Cillin 2000 or newer - Uninstall the one you currently use, unless the instructions or your new one specifically say to NOT uninstall the old one. - Install the new program. - Change the settings of the antivirus program so you can properly detect most viruses before they can do damage. - Buy a new version of the antivirus program when a notice appears on your screen indicating that you are no longer able to update your current version (usually about one year after you began using the program). No antivirus software program provides 100 percent protection. There is often a bit of delay between the time a virus is released and a cure is released via updates from antivirus companies. But with this level of protection you should rarely, if ever, suffer from the destruction that viruses can cause. As always, NEVER open attachments from anyone you don't know. BONUS: I currently use Norton and have been happy with it. My colleague (and an excellent computer instructor/consultant) Ken Loomis has kindly provided a Webpage with detailed steps for configuring Norton to get the best-possible protection without completely depleting resources on your computer. He's made this available at ... http://www.u-b-kool.com/Norton/ in both a graphic version and a text version. If you choose one of the other brands, you can use the details Ken has provided as a guideline for settings changes. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5,000 per month. - I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up. - I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. - The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier. - I don't jog; it makes the ice jump right out of my glass. - I used to watch golf on TV but my doctor told me that I need more exercise; so now I watch tennis. - If exercise work pays off in the future, shouldn't laziness pay off now? - A daily exercise regime never killed anyone, but why chance it? - Isn't having good health merely the slowest possible way you can die? - My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 now and we don't know where the heck she is. - I don't exercise at all. If God meant us to touch our toes, he would have put them further up on our body. - I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them. (Source unknown) Your source for life-long learning
